For 2004, we have expanded our race calendar to include triathlons, marathon and ultra distance trail runs, and adventure races. We are looking at adding a few more eventsbefore the end of the year. Also, we are nowoffering running, cycling, duathlon, and triathlon coaching and training. See our SERVICES page for further information in this regard. GOBLIN GALLOP 5k RUN/WALK The Goblin Gallop returns this Saturday, October 30, 2004 @ 8:00 AM. This annual Halloween favorite is now the warm up race for the next days Lowcountry Distance Classic. The Goblin Gallop will begin and end at the Bluffton Oyster Company, Wharf Street, Bluffton, SC. Along with the usual overall and age group awards; an award is also given to the fastest runner finishing in costume. Walkers are welcome and encouraged to join the fun! LOWCOUNTRY DISTANCE CLASSIC Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, & 10K On Sunday, October 31, 2004, runners from all over the country will compete in the 3rd annual Lowcountry Distance Classic. This growing event allows competitors to chose from a 10K, 1/2 marathon, or marathon. The courses are all flat and fast, USATF sanctioned and certified, and the marathon is a Boston qualifier. Along with Saturdays Goblin Gallop, this makes for a great runners weekend in the South Carolina Lowcountry. The races take place on roads that take runners across salt-water marshes and under oak tress dripping with Spanish moss. Though we cannot predict the weather, the temperatures in the Lowcountry in late October are usually great for running. The Bluffton/Hilton Head Island area also offers great golf, tennis, dining, and shopping for those looking for something more to do while in the Lowcountry. There will be packet pick up and race day registration. The races begin and end in front of the Beaufort County Library, Bluffton Village, Bluffton Road/Hwy 46, Bluffton, SC. All races begin together at 6:30 AM. Parking for the races will be in the Post Office and Bluffton Village parking lots. DO NOT PARK IN THE LIBRARY PARKING LOT. PLEASE DOWNLOAD AN APPLICATION FOR THIS SITE OR GO TO www.active.com FOR ALL RACE DETAILS INCLUDING PACKET PICK UP AND LATE REGISTRATION. 1/2 marathon course (the marathon is 2 loops of this) Begin in front of the Beaufort County library in Bluffton Village, turn left as if heading out of Bluffton Village but turn right onto the brick road in Bluffton Village that runs to the front of the post office, turn left to exit Bluffton Village just in front of the post office, turn right onto Bluffton Road/Hwy. 46, turn right onto Bluffton Parkway, stay on Bluffton Parkway to the end, turn right onto Burnt Church Road, stay on Burnt Church to the end/stop sign, turn left onto Alljoy Road, stay on Alljoy until taking a right on Myrtle Island Road where you take a right, go to the end of Myrtle Island Road, take the dirt loop and come back out Myrtle Island Road, take a right off of Myrtle Island Road onto Alljoy, take a right onto Estill Beach Road and follow that loop around back to Alljoy, take a right onto Alljoy, take a right onto Oyster Street, follow the Oyster loop until in comes back into Alljoy, follow Alljoy around the loop at Alljoy Landing/Beach, when the loop comes back to meet Alljoy cross Alljoy which now puts you on Thomas Lawton Drive, stay on Thomas Lawton--it makes a hard right hand curve and becomes Ulmer Drive, stay on Ulmer until the first right--which is known as Ulmer or Riverview Terrace--this is a loop that comes back into Ulmer where it intersects with Pine Island Road, go straight across at that intersection so that you are now on Pine Island Road, follow Pine Island until you are on Pine Island, turn left onto Driftwood Drive, after a short distance there Palmetto Point Road on the right, take a right onto Palmetto Point Road you then turn back left on Palmetto Point Road (this is a triangle), then left onto Driftwood Drive (you are now headed back in the direction from which you came), take a right onto Pine Island Road, when you reach the Pine Island Road/Ulmer Road intersection you do not cross and take the Ulmer/Riverview Terrace loop but turn right onto Ulmer, follow Ulmer taking what is now the 90 degree left turn so that Ulmer becomes Thomas Lawton (again, this is just going back the way you went out), at the Thomas Lawton/Alljoy intersection do not cross and take the Alljoy Beach loop but turn right onto Alljoy, follow Alljoy until you get to Confederate Drive on your right, turn right onto Confederate, follow Confederate until it ends (at a stop sign), turn right onto Alljoy, (DO NOT TURN RIGHT BACK ONTO BURNT CHURCH ROAD WHICH IS THE WAY YOU STARTED), stay on Alljoy which becomes Bridge Street, (you will pass in front of Town Hall) STAY ON BRIDGE STREET UNTIL IT ENDS WHICH IS AT HEYWARD STREET, (there are several streets off of Bridge Street including Calhoun--do not turn on any of these streets--turn only at Heyward), you will turn right on Heyward Street, then turn right at the Heyward/May River Road/Hwy 46 intersection, continue down May River Road/Hwy 46 to the 4 way stop at which you will turn left onto Bluffton Road/Hwy 46 on which you will run before turning into Bluffton Village at the first entrance, 1/2 marathoners will turn back right to finish in front of the library, marathoners will turn around at a point designated at the right turn to the library and will repeat the course. 10K Course Begin in front of the Beaufort County library in Bluffton Village, turn left as if heading out of Bluffton Village but turn right onto the brick road in Bluffton Village that runs to the front of the post office, turn left to exit Bluffton Village just in front of the post office, turn right onto Bluffton Road/Hwy. 46, turn right onto Bluffton Parkway, stay on Bluffton Parkway to the end, turn right onto Burnt Church Road, stay on Burnt Church to the end/stop sign, turn left onto Alljoy Road, stay on Alljoy until just before Myrtle Island Road at which there will be an orange cone and painted arrows on the road designating the turn around point, you will run back down Alljoy Road and stay on Alljoy Road (DO NOT TURN RIGHT BACK ONTO BURNT CHURCH ROAD WHICH IS THE WAY YOU STARTED) which becomes Bridge Street, (you will pass in front of Town Hall) STAY ON BRIDGE STREET UNTIL IT ENDS WHICH IS AT HEYWARD STREET, (there are several streets off of Bridge Street including Calhoun--do not turn on any of these streets--turn only at Heyward), you will turn right on Heyward Street, then turn right at the Heyward/May River Road/Hwy 46 intersection, continue down May River Road/Hwy 46 to the 4 way stop at which you will turn left onto Bluffton Road/Hwy 46 on which you will run before turning into Bluffton Village at the first entrance, you will turn back right to finish in front of the library. It is suggested that runners plan for warm weather based on most recent weather reports. PALMETTO TRAIL RUN NOVEMBER 20, 2004 10K, 1/2 Marathon, Marathon, 50K, & 50 Mile (NOTE THE DATE OF THIS RACE WAS CHANGED FROM OCTOBER 2, 2004 AT THE REQUEST OF THE FOREST SERVICE) The Palmetto Trail is a trail running from the SC Mountains to the SC coast. Though portions of the trail are still being developed, the southern portion of the trail that runs through Francis Marion National Forest is open for business. On Saturday, November 20, 2004, races in distances of 10K, 13.1 miles, 26.2 miles, 50K, and 50 miles will start from Buck Hall Recreation Area, Awendaw, approximately 30 miles north of Charleston, SC, on US 17. The 10K and 1/2 marathon, both beginning @ 8:00 AM, will take place on the Awendaw Connector portion of the trail. The marathon, 50K, and 50 mile races, all beginning at 6:30 AM, will follow the Awendaw Connector portion of the trail to the Swamp Fox National Recreational Trail. All races will be out & back. There is a 12 hour limit for the 3 longer races. These trails are flat and fast. The 50K and 50 mile races are great opportunities for someone looking to try their first ultra-distance race. Efforts to have the marathon, 50K, and 50 mile events sanctioned as the state USA Track & Field championships for trail running at these distances are in process. This is the last of a 3 race series of off road duathlons and 5k trail runs. This race takes place on the Bluffton Linear Trail which is located off of Highway 46/170 between Bluffton and Savannah, Ga. The trails are flat and non-technical but present a good challenging workout. Whether new to off road and trail races or an old hand, you will find that these events are for you. This is a great way to wind down the season for multisport athletes. See the column at the right to download or view an application which provides specific details or to register online. REINDEER RUN NOVEMBER 27, 2004 5K The Reindeer Run is back for 2004. Beginning and ending at the Bluffton Oyster Company, Wharf Street, Bluffton, SC, this flat and fast 5k is a great way to knock off some of those Thanksgiving pounds and kick off the Holiday Season. Awards will be given to the top 3 overall and masters male & female finishers, as well as in the normal age groups. Walkers are welcome and encouraged! One event that you will want to put on your race calendar is the March 5, 2005, Adventure Biathlon @ Hunting Island State Park. This paddle/run event is a fun event in which everyone can participate. We will have further information on this event on this site as soon as it becomes available to us.
