LOWCOUNTRY DISTANCE CLASSIC
Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, & 10K
On Sunday, October 31, 2004, runners from all over the country will compete in the 3rd annual Lowcountry Distance Classic. This growing event allows competitors to chose from a 10K, 1/2 marathon, or marathon. The courses are all flat and fast, USATF sanctioned and certified, and the marathon is a Boston qualifier. Along with Saturday’s Goblin Gallop, this makes for a great runner’s weekend in the South Carolina Lowcountry. The races take place on roads that take runners across salt-water marshes and under oak tress dripping with Spanish moss. Though we cannot predict the weather, the temperatures in the Lowcountry in late October are usually great for running. The Bluffton/Hilton Head Island area also offers great golf, tennis, dining, and shopping for those looking for something more to do while in the Lowcountry.

Applications for this event are available at this web site in pdf format. On line registration and further information for this event is currently available at:
Online Registration
or download the PDF Brochure 312kb.

Registration for all races is still open. There will be packet pick up and race day registration. The races begin and end in front of the Beaufort County Library, Bluffton Village, Bluffton Road/Hwy 46, Bluffton, SC.

All races begin together at 6:30 AM. Parking for the races will be in the Post Office and Bluffton Village parking lots. DO NOT PARK IN THE LIBRARY PARKING LOT. PLEASE DOWNLOAD AN APPLICATION FOR THIS SITE OR GO TO www.active.com FOR ALL RACE DETAILS INCLUDING PACKET PICK UP AND LATE REGISTRATION.

NOVEMBER 20, 2004 10K, 1/2 Marathon, Marathon, 50K, & 50 Mile

(NOTE THE DATE OF THIS RACE WAS CHANGED FROM OCTOBER 2, 2004 AT THE REQUEST OF THE FOREST SERVICE)
The Palmetto Trail is a trail running from the SC Mountains to the SC coast. Though portions of the trail are still being developed, the southern portion of the trail that runs through Francis Marion National Forest is open for business. On Saturday, November 20, 2004, races in distances of 10K, 13.1 miles, 26.2 miles, 50K, and 50 miles will start from Buck Hall Recreation Area, Awendaw, approximately 30 miles north of Charleston, SC, on US 17. The 10K and 1/2 marathon, both beginning @ 8:00 AM, will take place on the Awendaw Connector portion of the trail. The marathon, 50K, and 50 mile races, all beginning at 6:30 AM, will follow the Awendaw Connector portion of the trail to the Swamp Fox National Recreational Trail. All races will be out & back. There is a 12 hour limit for the 3 longer races. These trails are flat and fast. The 50K and 50 mile races are great opportunities for someone looking to try their first ultra-distance race. Efforts to have the marathon, 50K, and 50 mile events sanctioned as the state USA Track & Field championships for trail running at these distances are in process. For further information on the Palmetto Trail and to see trail maps, go to www.palmettoconservation.org.

Applications for this event will soon be available at this web site in pdf format. On line registration and further information for this event is currently available at www.active.com.
